JHL Constructors, Inc. - Building Colorado's Future
Arvada West Replacement High School
Owner: Jefferson County School District
Arcitect: LOA Architecture
Completion Date: August '08
Type of Contract: Hard Bid
Project Amount: $24,418,000
Description of Project:
This new facility, to be built on the existing site, will replace the original school built in 1964. The older facility, which was deemed too costly to renovate, will be demolished upon completion of the new project. Students will continue to attend the existing school during construction. Once the new wing is completed, the majority of the existing school will be razed. The Galleria Building (currently housing classrooms and administrative offices) will remain. At this time no definitive decision has been made as to its future usage. Designed to accommodate 2,000 students, the 162,000 square foot facility will have an office building/corporate type image. The new north wing will be identical to the two-story west wing (built with bond funds from 1997), which features large punched exterior windows and a two-story atrium. Contiguous to the atrium space are two levels of classrooms, which have borrowed light windows that capture the light of the atrium. This design promotes the day-lighting concept, which has been determined to be a benefit to all user groups. The new building will have an auxiliary and main gymnasium with locker rooms, auditorium, music rooms, administration, cafeteria/commons, kitchen and core classrooms for Math, English, Special Education, Business, Arts and Wood Technology. The 33-acre site will also have relocated athletic fields (baseball, softball and soccer), band practice field and tennis courts.
